Making the case for a Charter School in Cleveland County is really quite easy. Cleveland County was formed in 1841 and was predominately an agricultural community of cotton farms and textile mills.
In fact, cotton was truly King in Cleveland County. During the height of cotton production, there were 25 textile plants located in the county. By the 1960s, manufacturing firms began to crop up with over 100 manufacturer’s producing their goods in Cleveland County. By 1980, manufacturing plants were becoming more diversified.
Today, the county is still home to a few specialized textile plants, but the economy is largely made up of manufacturing firms, distribution centers, and small businesses, with our latest business recruitment target being data centers. The success of bringing Wipro Data Center which invested $75 Million and Disney Data Center, which invested another $200 Million, and most recently AT&T Data Center chose Cleveland County as home and made an $850 Million investment. Facebook’s Data Center brought $450 Million in neighboring Rutherford County, just five miles over the county line.
We have made the leap from Textiles to Technology happen. The demands on our K-12 education system are the greatest they’ve ever been in our history. The concentration of Pinnacle Classical Academy is to foster the transitioning economy and prepare our young people for success in higher education with a curriculum that is recognized internationally.
While we have a wonderful public school system in Cleveland County, it is not a one size fits all system. Working for economic development and trying to bring higher paying jobs to the community has been a great challenge. Cleveland County has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the state. We’ve been fortunate to recruit the data centers of fortune 500 companies and will continue to use that success as a building block. Part of our future success in recruiting jobs to the county, is to be able to offer parents an opportunity of choice in educating their children.
